5 Must-See Places in the Czech Republic
One of the joys of travel is discovering places steeped in history and beauty. That’s exactly what happened during my recent trip to the Czech Republic. I had the pleasure of exploring this captivating country while attending TBEX Europe in Ostrava. The Czech Republic, initially a mystery to me, has now become one of my favorite travel destinations. Join me as I take you through five must-see places in this Central European gem.
Ostrava
Stepping foot into Ostrava, Czech Republic, you’ll immediately feel its vibrant energy. Once an industrial hub, Ostrava has transformed into a captivating destination blending industrial roots with modern touches. Its architecture is a mix of old-world charm and contemporary design, offering a visual feast. From the iconic New Town Hall to repurposed industrial landmarks like the Dolní Vítkovice complex, Ostrava’s every corner tells a story. The city’s cultural scene is rich, with numerous museums, art galleries, and theaters. Nature lovers will appreciate the nearby national parks. Ostrava promises an authentic experience that will leave you with a deep appreciation for this hidden gem.
Jihlava
Visiting Jihlava is like stepping back in time. Strolling through its picturesque streets lined with centuries-old buildings, I was captivated by its rich heritage. The awe-inspiring architecture, from Saint Ignatius Church to the Holy Trinity Column, transported me to a bygone era. What made my visit truly memorable was the warm and welcoming locals, eager to share Jihlava’s history. A highlight was the Jihlava Underground, a labyrinth of medieval tunnels beneath the town. This experience left me with lasting memories and a desire to return one day.
Trebíc
Trebíc is a charming town with winding hilly streets that provide gorgeous views of the brightly colored buildings and rooftops. I had the chance to visit two of the well-known tourist sites there; The Jewish Quarter and St. Procopius Basilica which are both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Exploring its narrow streets, I discovered the beautifully restored Jewish homes and the magnificent Jewish cemetery, which spoke volumes about the rich Jewish history of the town. The St. Procopius Basilica, a true architectural gem, left me in awe with its intricate Gothic design and the peacefulness that permeated its halls. The town sits on both sides of the River Jihlava and I highly recommend waking early to take a walk along the banks to see the sunrise over the town.
Telc
Once you arrive in Telc you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped right onto the pages of a fairytale. The moment I laid eyes on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Telc Chateau, with its stunning Renaissance façade reflected in the tranquil surface of the chateau moat, I was captivated. The vibrant town square, surrounded by arcades and adorned with a Renaissance fountain, was a bustling hub of activity. I took a leisurely stroll around the square, exploring charming shops and stopping at a local café to savor delicious Czech pastries and coffee. Telc truly felt like a place where time stood still, allowing me to immerse myself in its beauty and history. I am already dreaming of the day when I can return to explore more of its hidden treasures and create new memories in this magical place.
Prague
A whirlwind 36-hour visit to Prague was a highlight of my Czech Republic adventure. The heart of the city lies in Old Town Square, a bustling hub with enticing restaurants, shops, and iconic landmarks like the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn. The Charles Bridge offers majestic views. To avoid crowds, venture out early. Prague may have been a brief stop, but its beauty left me longing for more.
The Czech Republic is a treasure trove of history and beauty, from the industrial allure of Ostrava to the fairytale charm of Jihlava and Telc, the historical riches of Trebíc, and the iconic landmarks of Prague. Each place offers a unique experience, and I can’t wait to return for more exploration. Pack your bags; the Czech Republic awaits!
