The winter weather outside may be keeping you indoors lately, but that doesn’t mean your family can’t have some fun! There are a variety of fun activities to keep your family entertained during the winter months, and most of them don’t cost a thing. Your family will have a blast this season with these 20 fun and free things to do this winter.

 

Go sledding. Grab your sled and head to the nearest hill for some sledding fun. Even if you don’t have a sled, your family can take part in sledding fun by riding down a hill on a large baking sheet.

Build a bonfire. Stack some wood in your fire pit/fireplace and gather around to toast some s’mores.

Go for a winter hike/walk.

Build a snowman. Gather up some snowman essentials, like a scarf, hat, and carrot nose from your house, then scour your yard for the rest of the snowman elements. Look for good sticks for arms and a few rocks to create eyes and mouth.

Have a snowball fight. Snowball fights are a popular winter activity that will keep your kids entertained for hours.

Volunteer your time at a soup kitchen or local food pantry. 

Feed the birds. Search your pantry for some bird-friendly food and watch as different birds visit your yard to eat.

Have a board game tournament. If the weather’s too cold outside, gather around the dining room table for a tournament of your favorite board games.

Read a book. Snuggle up on your couch with a warm blanket and enjoy a good read.

Make your own Christmas ornaments. It’s never too early to get a jump on next year’s Holiday decor!

Do a puzzle. Spread out a large puzzle on your dining room table and spend the afternoon putting it together.

Make homemade cards. Send them to residents of a local nursing home or troops stationed overseas.

Paint the snow. Mix food coloring with water in squirt bottles and paint the snow in your back yard.

Visit your local library to get a new book or take part in the free activities offered there.

Have a movie marathon. Grab some popcorn and watch your favorite movies, your family will love a winter movie marathon.

Bake cookies. Look through your pantry to find ingredients you already have at home to make some delicious cookies together.

Take family photos and make a photo collage with your favorites.

Clean out your closets. Declutter your closets and donate any unwanted clothing to charity. Turn it into a game…put on some music, set a timer, and dance while you sort!
